Willowpark Primary Academy

PE, Sport and Activity

At Willowpark, we recognise the huge value of Physical Education (PE).  It is our belief that PE develops children in a vast number of ways.  Children develop their motor competency and knowledge, skills and understanding of a wide range of sports, an understanding as to how PE and activity can contribute to a healthy lifestyle -both physically and mentally and how it can develop essential personal qualities such as resilience, perseverance, leadership, teamwork and many more. This contributes to the holistic development of our students and allows them to make informed choices about physical activity and sports, now and throughout their lives.

Our children take part in a range of different activities and sport, as detailed in our well -sequenced PE curriculum.  These activities range from basic fundamental movement exercises and simple games in the Early Years, through to more sophisticated tactical development and competitive sport in Key Stage 2.

It is our aim that our students leave Willowpark appropriately equipped with the knowledge and skills that they require to be successful in Key stage 3 and beyond.

We also host and take part in a wide range of extra-curricular activities and competitive fixtures and events, linked closely to our Personal Development offer. It is our aim that all children access high-quality PE, receiving appropriate adaptations if necessary.

The intention of the PE curriculum in our school:

  • To provide all students with high-quality PE and sport provision, which is accessible to all and challenging where appropriate.
  • To teach our students about the need for exercise as part of a healthy lifestyle.
  • To provide opportunities for pupils to take part in competitive sports and activities, both in and outside of school.
  • To foster links with other schools and agencies, both for competitive and non-competitive sports.
  • To instil an enjoyment of exercise/PE in students, making them more likely to be active as they grow older and into adult life.
  • To prepare our students for success in Key stage 3 and beyond.

At Willowpark, we utilise a scheme called GETSET4PE. This provides our teachers with all the resources they need to teach a successful PE curriculum across our Academy.  We tailor the scheme to meet the needs of our students and use assessment strategies to plan for those individuals that might need more support or challenge.  Our students also have weekly access to specialist and highly qualified coaches through our affiliations with Oldham Athletic Community Trust and specialist dance teacher - Lauren Harrop.  We further supplement this throughout the year from agencies such as: Oldham School Sport Partnership, Lancashire County Cricket Club, Sale Sharks and more.

March 2024 - Our Street dance team attending Stand Out Street dance competition where they finished an overall 4th place in a very competitive under 12 division. We are very proud of this group as they were competing against some very high quality dance schools from all over the North West.  We also managed to place 2nd and 5th respectively which is an amazing achievement considering they don't dance outside of school.

February 2023 - Our contemporary Dance team Fusion, once again attended the Calling U Out regional dance competition in Bury and placed an amazing 4th place against some very stiff competition from professional dance schools-amazing work!
