Reading in Nursery
The children in Nursery spend lots of time singing nursery rhymes , as well as playing games, chatting and telling stories. These activities help children to get ready for reading! They help children to hear different sounds, understand what a story is, join in with phrases and increase their vocabulary. Children will also start to make links between basic sounds and letters.

Nursery Rhyme Focus
At Willowpark, we learn a range of nursery rhymes throughout the Early Years.
Nursery Rhymes are important as they help us to develop a wide range of key skills. This includes:
Learning new words and extending our vocabulary.
Learning how to pronounce words correctly.
Helping us to become more active through body movement, as well as developing our fine and gross motor skills.
Learning early maths skills such as counting aloud.
Developing social skills such as listening and turn-taking.
Learning different beats and rhythms.
Learning how to recognise the sounds in words and where words begin and end in sentences.
Developing positive relationships between children and adults.
Developing our emotional awareness.
These are the nursery rhymes that we focus on in Nursery
Each term we aim to hold parent sessions, where you can come along and work with your child in the setting on a range of learning activities. This is a great way of picking up new ideas and tips on how you can support your child's learning at home as well as seeing how well your child is progressing in our nursery.
